Maria POMIANOWSKA,

Maria POMIANOWSKA (Poland) - sarangi.
Graduated in chello from the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. As a student at the Academy, she was granted a scholarship to learn sarangi under the guidance of maestro Pandit Ram Narayan in India.

After her graduation Maria Pomianowska did comparative studies researching playing techniques of different string instruments from China, Korea and Middle East. Later she found out that 400 years ago, Poland had an instrument suka based on the same principles as sarangi and contacted a leading polish musicologist, dr.Ewa Dahlig, and string instrument maker Andrzej Kuczkowski. They built this old instrument which Maria currently plays.

In 1994 Pomianowska founded the group Zespol Polski with wich she has been touring around Europe, Japan, Taiwan. Maria Pomianowska has been working with many musicians and composers (including the famous chello player, Yo Yo Ma) of classical, jazz and folk music. She also wrote music for theatre and film.
